TL;DR: TrainHeroic calls itself “the premier platform for strength coaches” (TrainHeroic), and as a strength and conditioning platform it earns that, in our view. It gives you percentage-based programming (TrainHeroic help center), real-time chat with video (TrainHeroic help center) and a marketplace for selling programs (TrainHeroic). Coaches look elsewhere when they need endurance features or physiological testing: TrainHeroic tracks volume, intensity and readiness (TrainHeroic help center), but in its help center we did not find watch sync for structured workouts, heart rate or power based load metrics, or lactate testing (TrainHeroic help center). This list covers six TrainHeroic alternatives for 2026, in the order we think fits the most common reasons coaches look beyond TrainHeroic: endurance features, cardio and lifting in one place, combined strength and endurance programming, or a different budget.
Update, 22 July 2026: Garmin has acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic, both owned by Peaksware Holdings (Garmin newsroom). The announcement says nothing about changes to device support, pricing or existing accounts, so everything below describes the platform as it works today. For what the deal does and does not change, read Garmin acquires TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic.
Why Coaches Look for TrainHeroic Alternatives
In our view, TrainHeroic is good at strength and conditioning. The reasons coaches look for alternatives rarely mean they found a flaw in what TrainHeroic does. They mean the platform does not cover what the coach needs to do.
The most common reasons:
- Need endurance features: TrainHeroic’s integrations article lists Apple Health (nutrition data) and Zapier (TrainHeroic help center). Its load tracking follows lifting: coaches see changes in volume, intensity and readiness (TrainHeroic help center), and Athlete Pro shows a training load heatmap built from RPE and weight lifted (TrainHeroic help center). We did not find Garmin or other watch sync, fitness/fatigue/form tracking, or heart rate and power zone workflows in its help center (TrainHeroic help center). For coaches whose athletes run or ride, that matters.
- Want physiological testing: TrainHeroic tracks working maxes and 1RM tests for lifts (TrainHeroic help center). We did not find lactate testing, threshold detection or zones set from test results in its help center (TrainHeroic help center).
- Need a combined platform: Coaches who want strength and endurance programming in one place, rather than managing two or three separate tools.
- Pricing by roster size: TrainHeroic prices its Coach Plan in tiers, from $9.99 per month for 1 athlete to $399.99 per month for up to 1,000 athletes, plus $9.99 per month per assistant coach (TrainHeroic). Your bill moves up a tier as your roster grows. Athletes who join through the Marketplace do not count toward your plan (TrainHeroic help center).
In our view, none of these make TrainHeroic a bad product. They are reasons it might not fit a specific coaching situation.
1. Coachbox
Best for: Coaches who need endurance and hybrid athlete coaching with integrated physiological testing
Coachbox comes at the coaching problem from the other direction. TrainHeroic centers on strength coaches (TrainHeroic); Coachbox centers on endurance coaching, with lactate testing, dated training zones, device sync and structured interval workouts as core features. You can add strength and core workouts to the same multi-sport calendar.
For coaches who would otherwise combine an endurance platform with TrainHeroic, Coachbox covers the endurance and testing side of that equation.
What Makes It Stand Out
- Lactate testing with AI analysis: Coachbox determines LT1 and LT2 automatically in under a minute. Type in your lactate values, or take a photo of a filled-in paper protocol and let Coachbox read it in. A test can include spirometry data. The resulting zones go straight into the athlete’s profile and training plan.
- Dated training zones: You add zones on a date and see how they evolve. Each workout is analyzed against the zones that applied on that day, so a new test carries into future sessions without rewriting the athlete’s history.
- Coachbox AI: Ask about a workout, a lactate test or a full season and it answers from your athletes’ data. It can also write changes straight into the training plan, and an MCP connection links Coachbox to ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants.
- Device sync for endurance workouts: Structured workouts go to Garmin, COROS and Wahoo. Completed sessions come in from those devices and from Polar, Suunto and Fitbit, together with HRV, sleep and resting heart rate.
- One coaching platform: Training planning, messaging with your athletes, an annual plan, analytics and health monitoring in one subscription.
- Branded lactate reports: The PDF export of a lactate test carries your own branding, on every plan.
- Published pricing: EUR prices on the website, excl. VAT, with athletes included per plan.
- Matchmaking: Athletes who sign up on Coachbox looking for a coach can be matched with you, and your own page in the public coach directory makes you findable by sport and location (matchmaking).
Honest Limitations
In our view, Coachbox does not match TrainHeroic’s depth in pure strength programming. If your athletes mostly lift, with percentage-based programming (TrainHeroic help center) and a preloaded exercise library (TrainHeroic help center), TrainHeroic fits that work better. Coachbox’s marketplace for selling training plans is coming later; TrainHeroic has one today (TrainHeroic).
Pricing
Coach plans run from 19 EUR per month billed yearly (25 EUR billed monthly) for Base with 5 athletes included, to 149 EUR per month billed yearly (190 EUR billed monthly) for Prime with 100 athletes included, all excl. VAT. Only active athletes, meaning athletes with workouts planned in the future, count toward your plan. Every plan comes with free lactate tests at the start of your license, with per-test pricing after that. A standalone Lactate Module (49 EUR per month billed yearly, excl. VAT) is available for labs and occasional testers. You can sign up, start the 14-day free trial and enter your first test the same day, with no demo or onboarding required.
Best For
Endurance coaches managing cyclists, runners, triathletes and swimmers. Coaches who want physiological testing inside daily coaching rather than as a separate workflow. Hybrid coaches whose athletes combine lifting with significant endurance training.
2. TrainingPeaks
Best for: Endurance coaches who want a widely used endurance platform with a large training plan marketplace
In our view, TrainingPeaks is the most obvious destination for coaches moving away from TrainHeroic because they need endurance features. Since July 2026 both belong to Garmin (Garmin newsroom).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Performance Management Chart: Fitness, fatigue and form tracked from TSS (TrainingPeaks help center). In our view, this has become a shared language in endurance coaching.
- Device and app sync: TrainingPeaks lists compatible devices and apps including Garmin, Wahoo, Polar, Suunto and Zwift (TrainingPeaks).
- Federation partners: TrainingPeaks lists national governing bodies such as Cycling Canada, Belgian Triathlon and AusTriathlon among its partners (TrainingPeaks partners).
- Training plan marketplace: TrainingPeaks reports 70,000+ training plans sold in 2023 (TrainingPeaks pricing for coaches).
- Workout builders: A structured workout builder that sends workouts to compatible devices (TrainingPeaks help center), and a Strength Workout Builder with RPE, RIR, supersets and circuits (TrainingPeaks help center).
Honest Limitations
TrainingPeaks now has a strength builder, but in our view its depth sits on the endurance side, and a lifting-first practice may still prefer TrainHeroic. Messaging is available to Premium athletes and coaches (TrainingPeaks help center). We did not find lactate test analysis in its zones documentation, which sets zones from threshold values (TrainingPeaks help center). Coach Edition starts at $21.99 per month billed monthly with 4 Basic athlete accounts and 1 Premium athlete account, or $54.99 per month for 5+ Basic athletes, plus a $99 start-up fee that a listed coupon code waives. Extra Premium athletes cost $9 per month each, with volume discounts; TrainingPeaks lists these prices in USD and notes that additional taxes may apply (TrainingPeaks pricing for coaches).
Best For
Endurance coaches whose athletes are already on TrainingPeaks, coaches building a business around selling training plans, and practitioners who rely on the fitness, fatigue and form framework for load management.
3. TrueCoach
Best for: Personal trainers and coaches who want simple program delivery for individual clients
TrueCoach takes a different approach than TrainHeroic. It aims at personal trainers and fitness businesses, with plans sized by the number of active clients (TrueCoach pricing).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Program builder and video library: A program and workout builder with a 3,000+ video exercise library (TrueCoach pricing).
- Messaging with video: In-app messaging with GIFs, photos and videos (TrueCoach pricing).
- Habit and nutrition tracking: Custom habit tracking and a MyFitnessPal integration for calorie and macro targets (TrueCoach pricing).
- Wearables and payments: Data from Apple, Garmin, WHOOP and other wearables on the Standard and Pro plans, and automated payments through Stripe (TrueCoach pricing).
- Client-facing experience: In our view, the athlete app feels like a consumer app rather than a professional tool, and the Standard and Pro plans add a custom-branded app (TrueCoach pricing).
Honest Limitations
On TrueCoach’s pricing page we did not find percentage-based programming, structured endurance workouts sent to watches, lactate testing or a program marketplace (TrueCoach pricing). In our view, it suits personal trainers working 1:1 with fitness clients better than performance coaches managing competitive athletes.
Pricing
Billed annually, the Starter plan lists $26.34 per month for up to 5 active clients, Standard $57.99 per month for up to 20 and Pro $136.99 per month for up to 50. Billed monthly, the same plans list $29.98, $69.98 and $164.98 per month. Prices are in USD, and the pricing page does not state whether tax is included (TrueCoach pricing).
Best For
Personal trainers and fitness coaches working with non-competitive clients who want a simple delivery platform without the complexity of performance-focused software.
4. TeamBuildr
Best for: High school, college and professional S&C programs managing large rosters
TeamBuildr sells strength and conditioning software to high schools, colleges, professional teams, gyms and tactical organizations (TeamBuildr). It competes with TrainHeroic in the team sport S&C space.
What Makes It Stand Out
- Roster size: Tiers from up to 50 to up to 1,000 profiles, with unlimited coaches on every tier (TeamBuildr pricing).
- Reporting: Completion, progress, questionnaire and workout results reports, plus 8 more, on every tier (TeamBuildr pricing).
- Weight room tools: Weight Room View for TV and tablet displays on the Platinum tiers, and max and PR tracking on every tier (TeamBuildr pricing).
- Integrations: VBT devices, force plates (Hawkin Dynamics, VALD ForceDecks) and athlete management systems, plus webhooks and FTP export, included in Platinum Pro (TeamBuildr pricing).
- Communication and payments: Messaging, document sharing, wellness questionnaires and online payments on every tier (TeamBuildr pricing).
Honest Limitations
In our view, TeamBuildr is built for organizations rather than independent coaches, and its focus on reporting can feel heavy for a small practice. On its pricing page we did not find structured endurance workouts sent to watches or lactate testing (TeamBuildr pricing).
Pricing
Silver costs $90 per month ($900 per year) for up to 50 profiles, Gold $150 per month for up to 250, Platinum $200 per month for up to 500 and Platinum Pro $280 per month for up to 1,000. Annual plans cost 10 times the monthly rate. An athlete management add-on costs $50 per month, and TeamBuildr offers custom pricing above 1,000 athletes. The pricing page does not state whether tax is included (TeamBuildr pricing).
Best For
S&C directors at high schools, colleges or professional organizations who need roster management, reporting and multi-sport programming at scale. Less relevant for independent coaches or smaller practices.
5. Volt Athletics
Best for: S&C coaches who want AI-adjusted strength programming from ready-made programs
Volt takes a different angle than most strength platforms. You start from a program built by CSCS-certified coaches, and Volt’s Cortex AI adapts the workouts over time (Volt Athletics). A drag-and-drop program builder and Volt Chat messaging are included on every plan (Volt for high schools).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Periodized programs from your season dates: Volt says you plug in your season dates and build a full year of periodized training in seconds, with 40+ sport-specific programs (Volt for high schools).
- AI-set weights: Volt’s Smart Sets algorithm learns each athlete’s strength and prescribes weights set by set (Volt Athletics).
- Team sport focus: Tablet Training Mode trains up to 20 athletes from one device, and Volt supports weight rooms with a no-phone policy (Volt for high schools).
- Readiness tracking: Volt tracks sleep, soreness, energy, mood and stress and flags who needs attention (Volt for high schools).
Honest Limitations
In our view, Volt suits coaches who want to save programming time more than coaches who want full control over every session. On the pages we checked we found conditioning plans but did not find structured endurance workouts sent to watches or lactate testing (Volt for high schools, Volt for training businesses).
Pricing
High school plans cost $900 per year for a team of up to 30 athletes and $1,400 per year for up to 100 (Volt for high schools). Training business plans start at $100 per month, billed monthly, and scale from 50 to 500+ users (Volt for training businesses). The pages do not state whether tax is included.
Best For
Team sport S&C coaches who want AI help with program design to reduce the work of managing several teams and sports at once.
6. Final Surge
Best for: Endurance coaches who want a straightforward training delivery platform with flat pricing
Final Surge is an endurance coaching platform with a free athlete account and flat coach packages (Final Surge pricing).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Endurance focus: The workout builder syncs or exports planned workouts to Garmin Connect, Apple Watch, TrainerRoad and Zwift, and you can analyze pace, heart rate, power, cadence and time in zones (Final Surge features).
- Teams and individuals: The Pro Package targets full-time coaches, club teams and training groups, and Team Social Walls let athletes talk to each other (Final Surge pricing, Final Surge features).
- Flat pricing: One price for 1 to 5 athletes and one for up to 100 (Final Surge pricing).
- Athlete communication: Workout Comments, plus a Mailbox for messages to individuals, groups and teams (Final Surge features). Messaging is common ground with TrainHeroic, which has TH Chat (TrainHeroic help center).
Honest Limitations
In our view, Final Surge’s analysis is lighter than TrainingPeaks’. In its help center we did not find a dedicated strength workout builder or lactate test analysis (Final Surge help center). Final Surge does run a training plan marketplace (Final Surge help center).
Pricing
The Coach Starter Package costs $19 per month for 1 to 5 athletes and the Pro Package $39 per month for up to 100 athletes, billed monthly. Billed yearly, they cost $190 and $390 per year; high schools and colleges get special pricing on request. The pricing page does not state whether tax is included (Final Surge pricing).
Best For
Budget-conscious endurance coaches who want a dedicated endurance platform, and coaches with large single-coach rosters who like a flat price.
Quick Comparison Table
| Tool | Platform Type | Endurance Features | Lactate Testing | Marketplace | Coach Pricing (as listed) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coachbox | Endurance + hybrid | Watch sync, dated zones | LT1/LT2 automatically | Coming later | From 19 EUR/month billed yearly, excl. VAT, 5 athletes included | Endurance and hybrid coaching with testing |
| TrainHeroic | Strength and conditioning | In-app interval timers (timers); watch sync not found (integrations) | Not found (help center) | Yes (site) | $9.99/month for 1 athlete to $399.99/month for up to 1,000, excl. US sales tax (pricing) | Strength coaches and S&C teams |
| TrainingPeaks | Endurance | Watch sync, PMC (help) | Not found (help) | Yes (pricing) | From $21.99/month billed monthly per coach, plus a $99 start-up fee and $9/month per extra Premium athlete, excl. tax (pricing) | Established endurance coaches |
| TrueCoach | General fitness | Not found (pricing) | Not found (pricing) | Not found (pricing) | From $26.34/month billed yearly ($29.98 billed monthly) for up to 5 clients, tax basis not stated (pricing) | Personal trainers |

| Volt Athletics | Team S&C with AI | Conditioning plans; watch sync not found (site) | Not found (site) | Not found (site) | From $900/year per high school team (pricing) or $100/month for training businesses (pricing), tax basis not stated | AI-assisted S&C programming |
| Final Surge | Endurance | Watch sync, zone analysis (features) | Not found (help center) | Yes (help) | $19/month billed monthly (1 to 5 athletes) or $39/month (up to 100), $190 or $390 billed yearly, tax basis not stated (pricing) | Budget-conscious endurance coaches |
All prices are what a coach pays, as each vendor lists them. Coachbox lists its prices excl. VAT. TrainHeroic adds US sales tax where required (TrainHeroic help center) and TrainingPeaks notes that additional taxes may apply (TrainingPeaks pricing for coaches), so we read both as excl. tax. TrueCoach, TeamBuildr, Volt and Final Surge do not state on their pricing pages whether tax is included, so we show their prices as listed and do not convert them. The platforms bill in different ways (tiers by roster size, per coach plus per athlete, per team per year, athletes included per plan), so what you pay depends on your roster and on who pays for athlete upgrades. “Not found” means we looked in the linked source and did not find the feature, not that it cannot exist.
How to Choose the Right Alternative
If you need endurance and testing in one place…
Go with Coachbox. In our view, this is the most direct alternative for coaches who have outgrown TrainHeroic because they coach athletes who train for endurance events, or want lactate testing inside their coaching practice. You get endurance training delivery, dated zones, device sync and lactate analysis in one subscription.
If your athletes are already on TrainingPeaks…
Consider TrainingPeaks for endurance, and keep TrainHeroic for strength if you need its depth. If your athletes are embedded in TrainingPeaks, moving them is disruptive. TrainingPeaks now has its own Strength Workout Builder (TrainingPeaks help center), so check whether it covers your lifting before you run two platforms.
If you coach a large institutional team sport program…
Look at TeamBuildr or Volt Athletics. For S&C directors at schools or professional organizations who need roster management, reporting and weight room tools, these platforms target that context (TeamBuildr, Volt for high schools).
If you want simpler…
Try TrueCoach or Final Surge. If you work mostly 1:1 with fitness clients (TrueCoach) or want flat pricing for endurance athletes (Final Surge), in our view a simpler platform may serve you better.
If you want to stay with strength but need more AI assistance…
Consider Volt Athletics. If programming large rosters by hand has become unsustainable, Volt’s AI-adjusted programs (Volt Athletics) reduce that work while keeping the strength and team sport focus.
Who Should Use TrainHeroic
Stay with TrainHeroic if your work is mainly in the weight room. It gives you percentage-based programming and linear weight progression (TrainHeroic help center), a preloaded exercise library you can add your own videos to (TrainHeroic help center), team and direct chat with video (TrainHeroic help center), and a marketplace with integrated billing if you want to sell programs (TrainHeroic help center). Its tiers start at $9.99 per month for one athlete, so a small practice can start cheaply (TrainHeroic).
Look elsewhere if your athletes run, ride or swim with structured workouts on their watch, or if lactate testing is part of your method.
The Bigger Picture
In our view, coaches rarely leave TrainHeroic because it is bad. They leave because what it does, strength programming for teams and S&C athletes, is not all they need.
Coaching in 2026 increasingly means managing athletes who train across modalities. Athletes who lift and run. Athletes who do CrossFit and also compete in obstacle races. Athletes who want physiological testing to set zones rather than guessing.
TrainHeroic centers on the weight room (TrainHeroic). The coaches who find it limiting are usually the ones whose work has grown beyond the weight room, or never started there.
The best alternative is the one that matches the work you actually do with athletes. If that work is mainly strength, TrainHeroic remains a strong choice in our view. If it is endurance, hybrid or testing-based, one of the platforms above may fit better.
