TL;DR: Nolio is a well-built French training platform for endurance coaches, clubs and athletes. The Grenoble-based team has won over 4,500 coaches and 55,000 athletes, plus an impressive roster of French and Swiss federations. The workout builder mixes endurance and strength steps in one session, device sync covers all the major brands, and the pricing is transparent and fair. But Nolio is a distinctly French product. Parts of the English site still display in French, the community and marketplace are largely francophone, and there’s no integrated lactate testing, no AI assistant, and no built-in coach education. For coaches inside the French sports ecosystem, Nolio is a strong choice. For coaches outside it, the rough edges show quickly.
What Is Nolio?
Nolio is a training platform for coaches, clubs and athletes, built by a small team in Grenoble, France. It positions itself as the tool that simplifies the daily life of endurance coaches: plan workouts, analyze performance, monitor athletes and communicate, all in one place.
The platform has grown into the default choice for much of the French endurance coaching scene. More than 4,500 coaches and 55,000 athletes use it, and Nolio works with an unusual number of national federations and structures: the French cycling federation (FFC), the French athletics federation (FFA), the French rowing and sailing federations, Swiss Rowing, Swiss Canoe and several regional triathlon leagues. That federation adoption says something about the product’s credibility in structured, high-volume club environments.
Nolio covers cycling, running, trail, triathlon and general endurance sports, with a growing strength training component built around a 200+ exercise library. This review looks at what Nolio does well and where it falls short, particularly for coaches working outside France.
Key Features
Planned and Completed Calendars
Nolio’s calendar is the heart of the platform, and it uses a two-calendar model: one calendar for planned sessions and one for completed sessions. Coaches plan on one side, completed activities flow in automatically from connected devices on the other, and the comparison between the two drives training adjustments.
The calendar supports a wide range of event types beyond workouts: competitions with countdown timers, notes for availability, injuries or menstruation tracking, training cycles, questionnaires and scheduled messages. Everything can be made recurring, and templates let coaches reuse sessions, plans and questionnaires across athletes.
Structured Workout Builder
The workout builder handles structured sessions with steps, targets, durations, distances and repetitions, visualized as an interval graph. Sessions are sent automatically to the athlete’s watch or bike computer, and targets adapt to each athlete’s configured zones and metrics.
Two things stand out:
- Mixed endurance and strength steps: A single session can combine interval work with strength exercises, useful for coaches who program brick sessions or gym work alongside endurance training
- Flexible targets: Steps can be based on training zones (heart rate, power, pace), metrics (max HR, FTP, MAP, MAS or custom metrics), RPE or raw values
The strength side draws on a library of 200+ exercises with videos, covering Hyrox, CrossFit, weight training and general conditioning.
Device Sync
Nolio connects to the major device ecosystems: Garmin, Polar, Suunto, COROS, Wahoo, Zwift, Strava, Apple Watch, Decathlon, Withings, Oura, Whoop and Concept2, among others. Sync works in both directions: structured workouts go out to watches and head units, completed activities and health metrics (weight, steps, sleep) come back in automatically.
Training Load and Analysis
Nolio offers three training load models that can run side by side: Foster (session RPE), Coggan (power-based) and TRIMP (heart rate based, with a choice between the Banister & Morton and Edwards & Stagno calculation methods). Coaches who want to compare a subjective load model against an objective one can do so without leaving the platform.
Session analysis is genuinely deep for a platform at this price point:
- Cycling-specific tools: W’bal, left/right balance, torque and power records plotted on the ride data
- Trail-specific tools: ascent speed and grade-adjusted pace (VAP), developed with trail running teams
- Interval detection: automatic identification of best segments by duration, distance or key metrics
- Custom debrief: after each session athletes log RPE and sensations, and coaches can add their own questions (mood, enjoyment, soreness)
Monitoring, Metrics and HRV
The monitoring section centralizes health and performance data in customizable dashboards. Default metrics cover sleep, resting HR, weight, FTP, MAS and max HR. Coaches can create custom metrics and even advanced computed metrics that apply statistical functions over training data.
The mobile app includes HRV measurement, either with a chest strap or through a camera-based protocol on the phone, with trend analysis over time. Group monitoring dashboards give coaches a single view over all their athletes’ key indicators.
Team Management and Communication
Nolio was designed with clubs in mind. Teams can hold unlimited coaches and athletes, organized in groups and subgroups, with assistant coaches limited to specific groups without admin rights. Athletes can belong to several teams at once.
Communication happens in two layers: per-session messaging attached to each workout, and a full instant messaging system with individual and group conversations plus file sharing. Scheduled messages let coaches prepare communication in advance.
Business Tools and Marketplace
Nolio includes billing features that most competitors reserve for higher tiers: Stripe-based payment processing, automated recurring athlete subscriptions and centralized invoicing. The Nolio Marketplace lets coaches sell training plans and coaching services to athletes on the platform, with coach profile pages that display experience, specialties and reviews.
Transaction fees apply on automated subscriptions and marketplace sales, with reduced fees on the higher coach and club plans.
Strengths
Fair, Transparent Pricing
Nolio’s pricing is straightforward and affordable. Coach plans run from 19.90 to 39.90 euro per month, club plans from 29.90 to 49.90 euro, athletes ride along free, and the optional athlete Premium is 6.90 euro per month. Every plan comes with a one-month free trial without a credit card. For the feature set on offer, the value is genuinely strong. See the full breakdown in our Nolio Pricing analysis.
Deep Federation and Club Roots
No other platform of this size can point to the FFC, FFA, French rowing, Swiss Rowing and Swiss Canoe as working partners. For clubs and federative structures in France and Switzerland, that track record reduces adoption risk: the platform has already been stress-tested in exactly that environment, and the club plans (groups, subgroups, assistant coaches, shared administration) reflect it.
Serious Analysis Tools at a Modest Price
W’bal, left/right balance, torque analysis, grade-adjusted pace, automatic interval detection and three parallel training load models are features you’d expect from platforms costing considerably more. Cycling and trail coaches in particular get analysis depth that punches above the price.
Human, Local Support
Support comes directly from the team in Grenoble, and Nolio publishes a 93% satisfaction rate on support conversations (Intercom, 2025). Coaches talk to a person who knows the product, not a ticket queue. The team also offers free demo calls on every plan.
Built-In Business Administration
Automated athlete subscriptions, Stripe payments and centralized invoicing solve a real problem for self-employed coaches. Chasing monthly payments is unglamorous work, and Nolio removes most of it.
Weaknesses
A French Product, First and Foremost
This is the most visible limitation for international coaches. Parts of Nolio’s English website, including large sections of the features page, still display in French. The community, the marketplace listings and much of the content ecosystem (masterclasses, webinars, courses) are predominantly francophone.
None of this makes the product worse for French-speaking users. But an English, Dutch or German-speaking coach evaluating Nolio will regularly bump into untranslated screens and French-first communication, and their athletes will too.
No Lactate Testing or Physiological Assessment
Nolio has no testing module. There’s no way to run a lactate step test, detect thresholds from test data, or generate training zones from a physiological assessment inside the platform. Zones are configured manually or through formula-based templates.
For coaches who periodize training around lactate thresholds rather than field-test estimates, this means running the testing workflow in a separate tool and transferring results by hand.
No AI Assistance
Nolio offers no AI-supported analysis or assistant. Every review of athlete data is manual. That’s a defensible product choice, but as coaches manage larger rosters, the absence of automated interpretation becomes a real time cost, and it’s an area where competitors are moving quickly.
No Built-In Coach Education
Nolio hosts masterclasses and webinars, mostly in French, but there’s no structured education offering comparable to a coach academy. Coaches looking to combine software with formal development in training methodology will need to source that elsewhere.
Athlete Limits and Add-On Costs
Each plan carries athlete caps: 3 on Coach Starter, 25 on Coach Classic, 30 included on Coach Pro with per-athlete fees beyond that (1.50 euro per month up to 50 athletes, then 1 euro). Additional coaches cost 12 euro per month each. The caps are reasonable, but a growing coaching business will hit them, and the effective monthly price then depends on roster size. Marketplace sales and automated subscriptions carry transaction fees on top.
Limited Recognition Outside France and Switzerland
Nolio’s community, content and federation partnerships are concentrated in the French-speaking sports world. Coaches elsewhere will find fewer peers on the platform, fewer local resources and a marketplace with little relevant inventory. The product works internationally; the ecosystem around it mostly doesn’t yet.
Who Is Nolio Best For?
Nolio is the right choice if you:
- Coach in France or francophone Switzerland: The ecosystem, support, community and content are strongest there
- Run a club or federative structure: Groups, subgroups, assistant coaches and club plans were built for exactly this
- Coach cycling or trail with a data focus: W’bal, torque, VAP and interval detection give real analysis depth
- Want business administration included: Automated athlete billing via Stripe at no extra platform cost
- Value human support: A small team in Grenoble that answers directly
Ideal Nolio user: A French club coach or self-employed endurance coach managing 10 to 80 athletes, embedded in the French federative sports scene, who wants planning, analysis and athlete billing in one affordable tool.
Who Should Look Elsewhere?
Nolio may not be the right fit if you:
- Coach in Dutch or English-first environments where a fully translated platform matters for you and your athletes
- Run lactate testing and want threshold detection and zone generation built into your coaching platform
- Want AI support for interpreting athlete data as your roster grows
- Need built-in coach education alongside the software
- Are scaling past the athlete caps and want pricing that doesn’t grow per athlete
- Coach mostly outside France and Switzerland and want a community and content in your own language
Coachbox as an Alternative
Coachbox covers the same core ground as Nolio: structured workout planning, device sync, athlete monitoring and in-app communication for endurance coaches. The difference is in where each platform goes beyond that core.
What Coachbox brings that Nolio doesn’t:
- AI-powered lactate testing: Run a lactate step test, and the AI reads and interprets the results with automatic LT1/LT2 detection in under 60 seconds, then updates the athlete’s training zones
- Coachbox AI: An assistant you can chat with about your athletes’ workouts, metrics and zones for a critical, evidence-based read on their training
- Coachbox Academy: Built-in coach education covering training methodology and coaching practice
- Multilingual platform: Fully localized in seven languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. French-speaking coaches keep a native-language platform when they switch, and coaches with athletes across borders can offer each of them the app in their own language
- Testing-to-training workflow: Zones flow from test results into workout prescription without manual transfer
What Coachbox doesn’t match Nolio on:
- Federation-scale club tooling: Nolio’s groups, subgroups and assistant coach roles are more developed for large federative structures
- Athlete billing automation: Nolio’s built-in Stripe subscriptions and marketplace ship today; the Coachbox equivalents are coming soon
- Cycling analysis depth: W’bal, torque and left/right balance analysis go further than Coachbox’s session analysis in cycling specifics
The honest split: Nolio is the stronger choice for French clubs and federative environments that need club administration and athlete billing. Coachbox is the stronger choice for coaches who want physiological testing, AI support and planning in one platform, in their own language. That includes French: moving to Coachbox for the testing workflow does not mean giving up a localized platform. For the full feature-by-feature breakdown, see Coachbox vs Nolio.
Coachbox is used by 25,000+ users who have logged 11 million+ workouts, syncs with Garmin, Wahoo, Polar, Suunto, COROS, Fitbit and TomTom (Zwift and Rouvy coming soon), and offers transparent EUR pricing from EUR 12.95/month, with a free athlete account.
The Bottom Line
Nolio is a genuinely good platform that deserves its position in the French coaching market. The two-calendar model, the mixed endurance and strength workout builder, the analysis depth and the built-in athlete billing add up to strong value at 19.90 to 39.90 euro per month. The federation partnerships are earned, not decorative.
Its limits are equally clear. The product and its ecosystem are French-first, there’s no physiological testing, no AI assistance and no built-in education, and the per-athlete add-on costs accumulate as a coaching business grows.
If you coach within the French sports ecosystem, put Nolio on your shortlist. If you coach elsewhere, or you want lactate testing and AI-supported analysis in the same platform that plans your training, look at the alternatives first.
