TL;DR: In our view, TrainingPeaks is the industry standard, the platform most endurance coaches measure the others against, and for many it remains a good choice. Coaches still look beyond it for a handful of reasons: the per-athlete cost of coach-paid Premium athletes, lactate testing that lives in a separate tool, in-app communication that only works with Premium athletes, or pricing in USD. Here are six TrainingPeaks alternatives in 2026, with our best pick first, ranked by how well we think they address the most common reasons coaches look beyond the default. After the list, we cover what happened to Today’s Plan.
Update, 22 July 2026: Garmin has acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic from Peaksware Holdings, their parent company (Garmin press release). The announcement does not mention changes to TrainingPeaks’ pricing or coach accounts, and the prices below are the ones TrainingPeaks lists on 29 September 2026. For what the deal does and does not change, read Garmin acquires TrainingPeaks.
Why Coaches Look for TrainingPeaks Alternatives
Before diving into the list, it helps to understand what drives the search:
- Coach-paid Premium costs grow with your roster: The Coach Edition costs 21.99 USD per month billed monthly with 4 Basic athletes and 1 Premium athlete; Coach Edition Unlimited costs 54.99 USD per month with unlimited Basic athletes and 1 Premium athlete (coach billing). Each extra Premium athlete costs 9 USD per month when you pay for it, with volume discounts: 20 to 49 athletes cost 8.10 USD each (TrainingPeaks for coaches). Athletes can also buy Premium themselves, at 19.95 USD per month or 134.99 USD per year (TrainingPeaks for athletes).
- Lactate testing lives elsewhere: TrainingPeaks detects heart rate, power and pace thresholds from workouts and can apply them automatically (threshold notifications). We did not find a way to record a blood lactate step test and derive thresholds from it in their help center (zones calculator), so zones from a lab or field lactate test go in by hand.
- Messaging needs Premium: Coaches leave post-activity comments (TrainingPeaks for coaches), and TrainingPeaks Messaging adds direct and group conversations on web and mobile, limited to Premium athletes and coaches aged 18 and older (TrainingPeaks Messaging). Athletes on a free Basic account talk to you through comments or another app.
- Priced in USD, taxes on top: TrainingPeaks lists its prices in USD with “additional taxes may apply” (TrainingPeaks for coaches) and charges VAT to buyers in Europe (sales tax for TrainingPeaks products). The web app is available in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish, and the mobile apps add Japanese and Russian (TrainingPeaks languages).
- Several moving parts in the price: A base fee, a 99 USD start-up fee that a coupon on the page waives, coach-paid Premium athletes, volume discount tiers and the option for athletes to pay for Premium themselves (TrainingPeaks for coaches). In our view, working out your total takes some arithmetic.
- Branded test reports: Coaches can put their logo in the TrainingPeaks account header and set redirect URLs to their own website (branding). We did not find branded PDF reports for test results in their help center.
None of these make TrainingPeaks a bad product. In our view it is very good at what it does. These are simply reasons why it might not fit your specific needs and workflow.
Who Should Use TrainingPeaks
Stay with TrainingPeaks if your athletes already speak TSS, CTL and ATL, or train inside a program that uses TrainingPeaks. The Performance Management Chart is documented in depth (PMC), TrainingPeaks says it syncs with more brands than any other endurance training app and is trusted by top sports federations (coach features), and its marketplace reports more than 100,000 visits per month and more than 70,000 plans sold in 2023 (TrainingPeaks for coaches). TrainingPeaks Virtual adds indoor riding with branded events and group rides (same source), and TrainingPeaks Payments lets coaches in the US, UK, Canada and Australia bill athletes through Stripe (TrainingPeaks Payments). If marketplace revenue, virtual riding or the TSS framework sit at the center of your practice, we think none of the tools below replaces it.
1. Coachbox
Best for: Coaches who want lactate testing, communication, and training planning in one platform
We build Coachbox, so read this section knowing where it comes from. Coachbox and TrainingPeaks share the fundamentals: a training calendar, structured workouts, device sync, training load and coach-athlete communication (TrainingPeaks for coaches). Coachbox adds a lactate testing module that feeds zones straight into the training plan, so you do not need a separate testing tool.
What Makes It Stand Out
- Lactate testing inside the platform: Type in your lactate values, or upload a photo of a paper protocol, and Coachbox detects LT1 and LT2 automatically in under a minute. A test can include spirometry data too. Every coaching plan includes 5 to 20 free tests at the start of your license, then 3 to 6 EUR excl. VAT per test depending on the plan.
- Dated zones: Zones from a lactate test flow into the athlete’s profile and every future session in the plan. Past sessions stay scored against the zones that were in force on that day, so your long-term trends do not get rewritten by today’s threshold.
- Coachbox AI: An assistant that answers questions about your athletes and writes changes straight into the training plan. Coachbox also connects to ChatGPT, Claude and other assistants over MCP.
- Messaging and workout comments: Direct and group messages, and comments on individual workouts, in the web and mobile apps.
- Recovery and health data: HRV, sleep and resting heart rate sync from the athlete’s device, and injuries are logged as milestones.
- Branded PDF reports of lactate tests: Export a lactate test as a PDF fully in your own brand, on every plan. The app itself is not brandable.
- EUR pricing: A coach plan with a number of athletes included, a fee for each extra active athlete, and a free account for the athletes you coach.
- Multilingual: The platform is available in seven languages (English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese).
- 25,000+ users, 12M+ workouts: Logged across more than 35 countries.
- Matchmaking: Athletes who sign up on Coachbox looking for a coach can be matched with you, and your own page in the public coach directory makes you findable by sport and location (matchmaking).
Honest Limitations
Coachbox doesn’t match TrainingPeaks’ ecosystem size. Training plan sales and athlete payment automation are coming later rather than available today, and there is no virtual riding platform like TrainingPeaks Virtual (TrainingPeaks for coaches). Devices cover Garmin, Polar, COROS, Suunto, Wahoo, Apple Watch, Fitbit and TomTom, with power from a power meter or Stryd arriving with the workouts, but the total integration count is smaller. If marketplace revenue or virtual riding are important to your practice, Coachbox doesn’t offer those today.
Pricing
Listed on our pricing page. Base costs 19 EUR per month billed yearly or 25 EUR billed monthly, with 5 athletes included and 2.50 EUR per extra active athlete. Build costs 49 or 65 EUR with 25 athletes, Peak 79 or 99 EUR with 50 athletes, and Prime 149 or 190 EUR with 100 athletes. All prices are excl. VAT. An active athlete is one with workouts planned in the future. The trial runs 14 days without a credit card.
Best For
Endurance coaches who run regular lactate tests, want athlete communication in the same place as the plan, and prefer one subscription that covers testing, planning, messaging, and analytics. Particularly relevant for coaches in Europe who want the app in their athletes’ language and pricing in EUR.
2. Final Surge
Best for: Coaches who want package pricing and free athlete accounts
Final Surge gives athletes a free account and charges coaches a package price instead of a fee per Premium athlete (Final Surge pricing). In our view, it has built a loyal following in running.
What Makes It Stand Out
- Package pricing: The Starter package covers 1 to 5 athletes for 19 USD per month and includes all coaching features; the Pro package covers up to 100 athletes for 39 USD per month. Billed yearly, they cost 190 and 390 USD per year, a 17% saving. Neither has setup fees, and coaches with more than 100 athletes or at high schools and colleges ask for special pricing (Final Surge pricing).
- Free athlete accounts: The free athlete account includes device sync, stats and the web, iOS and Android apps (same source). Athletes who want more can add Athlete Premium, from 6.58 USD per month billed annually, for HRV and morning readiness, weather, a route builder and an athlete page (Athlete Premium).
- Practical training calendar: Drag workouts from a library onto calendars, copy weeks, apply full plans and follow groups in a multi-calendar view (Final Surge for coaches). Final Surge positions itself for coaching “any sport” (Final Surge).
- Communication: Workout comments and a Mailbox for messages to individuals, several athletes or teams, plus video and file attachments on workouts and team Social Walls (Final Surge features).
- Training plan marketplace: Coaches can sell plans on the Final Surge marketplace (Final Surge for coaches) and keep 70% of the sale price (selling training plans).
Honest Limitations
In our view, the interface is functional rather than polished. We did not find lactate test analysis or a PMC-style fitness and fatigue model in Final Surge’s features or help center (Final Surge features, Final Surge support). Planned workouts sync or export to Garmin Connect, Apple Watch, TrainerRoad and Zwift (Final Surge features).
Pricing
Coaches pay 19 USD per month for 1 to 5 athletes or 39 USD per month for up to 100 athletes, as listed; the pricing page does not say whether taxes are included (Final Surge pricing). Athletes use the free account or add Athlete Premium themselves (Athlete Premium).
Best For
Running and triathlon coaches who want a capable platform with a predictable package price and free athlete accounts, and who don’t need lactate testing in the same tool.
3. TrainHeroic
Best for: Strength and hybrid coaches who program both endurance and strength
TrainHeroic calls itself “the premier platform for strength coaches” (TrainHeroic). If your coaching blends endurance training with significant strength and conditioning work, its programming tools go deeper on the strength side, in our view, than endurance-focused platforms. Like TrainingPeaks, it now belongs to Garmin (Garmin press release).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Strength programming: A customizable library of workouts, circuits and full programs, video review of athlete lifts and client tracking of compliance and progress (TrainHeroic for coaches).
- Marketplace: Sell training programs through the TrainHeroic Marketplace (same source).
- Real-time chat and teams: Messages, GIFs and reactions, and teams for group program delivery and group communication (same source).
- Your own branding: Add your logo, custom exercise demos and coaching content (same source).
- Readiness surveys: Athletes rate sleep quality, mood, energy, stress and soreness before a session, and coaches follow the trends (readiness surveys).
Honest Limitations
TrainHeroic shows Athlete Pro users a training load heatmap built from RPE and lifted volume (training load heatmaps). We did not find TSS, CTL or a PMC-style load chart in TrainHeroic’s help center, and the integrations it lists are Apple Health and Zapier (integrations). We did not find sync with GPS watches, power meters or lactate testing there either. In our view, it is not built for traditional endurance periodization.
Pricing
Priced by roster size: 9.99 USD per month for 1 athlete, 17.99 USD for up to 5, 44.99 USD for up to 25, 99.99 USD for up to 100 and 399.99 USD for up to 1,000, with assistant coaches at 9.99 USD per month each (TrainHeroic for coaches). US sales tax is added where required (sales tax FAQ).
Best For
Coaches who program meaningful strength work alongside endurance training. Particularly relevant for coaches working with hybrid athletes, obstacle course racers, or endurance athletes with significant strength needs.
4. TrueCoach
Best for: Personal trainers and coaches who put the client relationship first
TrueCoach sells its plans to personal training businesses (TrueCoach pricing). Where TrainingPeaks focuses on endurance data, TrueCoach focuses, in our view, on communication, engagement, and the day-to-day client experience.
What Makes It Stand Out
- Messaging: Real-time in-app messaging with photos, videos and GIFs, and clients comment on specific exercises (TrueCoach pricing).
- Exercise video library: 3,000+ professional exercise videos, plus your own (same source).
- Workout templates: Build templates and copy them to several clients (same source).
- Nutrition and habits: MyFitnessPal integration and custom habit tracking (same source).
- Payments and wearables: Automated client payments through Stripe on every plan; data from Apple, Garmin, WHOOP and other wearables and a custom-branded app from the Standard plan (same source).
Honest Limitations
On TrueCoach’s pricing page we did not find TSS, CTL or PMC analytics, structured interval workouts with power or heart rate targets sent to devices, a training plan marketplace or lactate testing (TrueCoach pricing). In our view, it is not designed for endurance periodization with mesocycles and annual planning.
Pricing
Priced by active clients: Starter covers up to 5 for 29.98 USD per month billed monthly or 26.34 USD per month billed annually, Standard up to 20 for 69.98 or 57.99 USD, and Pro up to 50 for 164.98 or 136.99 USD. TrueCoach lists prices in USD (TrueCoach pricing), and its terms say subscription fees do not include taxes such as VAT or sales tax (TrueCoach terms).
Best For
Personal trainers and coaches who work with fitness-oriented clients and value communication and the client experience over endurance-specific analytics.
For a detailed comparison, see TrainingPeaks vs TrueCoach vs Coachbox.
5. Intervals.icu
Best for: Data-driven athletes and coaches who want deep analytics at no cost
Intervals.icu started in 2018 as a side project by developer and cyclist David Tinker, who went full-time on it in September 2024 and now builds it with a small team and a community of volunteers (about Intervals.icu). It reports more than 160,000 active athletes (Intervals.icu).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Free core platform: Fitness, fatigue and form tracking, activity analysis, a training calendar and workout builder cost nothing (Intervals.icu pricing).
- Deep performance analytics: The Performance Management Chart, automatic eFTP estimation, and power curve models including Morton’s 3P and Monod & Scherrer (Intervals.icu).
- Wide sync: Garmin, Strava, Polar, Suunto, COROS, Wahoo, Zwift and more (Intervals.icu pricing).
- Coaching and chat: Follow and coach athletes, tag and organize them, and use group chat to share workouts and activities (communicate). The Supporter plan adds teams and coaching organisations (Intervals.icu pricing).
Honest Limitations
In our view, it is an analysis platform first and a coaching business tool second. We did not find client billing or branded reports on its pricing page (Intervals.icu pricing), or a blood lactate step test workflow in its planning features (plan features). In our view, the interface is powerful but can feel overwhelming for non-technical athletes.
Pricing
Free, with an optional Supporter plan at 4 USD per month, as listed, that adds features such as the annual training plan builder and team features (Intervals.icu pricing).
Best For
Self-coached athletes who want deep analytics without paying for TrainingPeaks Premium, and coaches of small groups who don’t need billing or lactate testing.
6. Training Tilt
Best for: Coaches who want their own brand, website and payments alongside coaching tools
Training Tilt calls itself an all-in-one coaching platform for endurance and fitness coaches, combining training delivery, athlete management, payments and your own brand (Training Tilt).
What Makes It Stand Out
- Business tools: Client payments, an online store, a contact database, online forms and client goals and events (Training Tilt pricing).
- Your own brand: Clients log in to a platform with your login page, colors and menu items; the Ultimate plan adds your own iPhone and Android apps (Training Tilt).
- Coaching website: A website and landing pages for your coaching business (same source).
- Communication: Comments on individual workouts, one-to-one conversations and group or individual emails (same source).
- AI: An AI assistant coach in beta, and a connection to ChatGPT, Claude or any MCP-compatible assistant (Training Tilt features).
Honest Limitations
In our view, a platform that covers this much business ground does not go as deep on endurance analytics as a specialized tool. We did not find lactate test analysis on its website (Training Tilt features).
Pricing
Starter from 25 USD per month with 30 clients included, Essentials from 49 USD per month with 100 clients included, and Ultimate on request with a setup fee. Training Tilt says it never charges your clients directly, and payments carry a 3% transaction fee on Starter and Essentials (1% on Ultimate) plus Stripe fees. Prices are in US dollars (Training Tilt pricing), and Training Tilt’s terms define the subscription fee as excluding any taxes and duties (Training Tilt terms).
Best For
Solo coaches who want to run their coaching business, website and training delivery from one branded platform.
What Happened to Today’s Plan
Important: Today’s Plan is no longer in operation, according to its own website (Today’s Plan). We include it here because many coaches searching for TrainingPeaks alternatives will still find old references to it. If you were a Today’s Plan user looking for a new home, the six alternatives above are your active options. For a longer list, read Today’s Plan alternatives.
In our experience, coaches valued Today’s Plan for its analytics and its planning tools for cycling and triathlon. Its closure left its users looking for a new platform, and many of them are now evaluating the tools on this list.
If You’re a Former Today’s Plan User
Consider what you valued most about the platform:
- Deep analytics? Look at Intervals.icu (free core platform) or Coachbox (analytics next to testing)
- Triathlon planning? Coachbox and Final Surge both plan across sports (Final Surge)
- One platform for everything? Coachbox combines planning, testing, and communication
Quick Comparison Table
| Tool | Platform | Lactate test analysis | Coach-athlete messaging | How a coach pays | Plan marketplace | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TrainingPeaks | Web + mobile | Not found (where we looked) | With Premium athletes (source) | From 21.99 USD/month billed monthly with 1 Premium athlete, plus 9 USD per extra coach-paid Premium athlete with volume discounts, excl. taxes (source) | Yes (source) | The TSS ecosystem |
| Coachbox | Web + mobile | Yes, LT1/LT2 in under a minute | Yes | From 19 EUR/month billed yearly or 25 EUR monthly with 5 athletes, then 2.50 EUR per extra active athlete, excl. VAT | Coming later | Testing + coaching in one |
| Final Surge | Web + mobile | Not found (where we looked) | Mailbox and comments (source) | 19 USD/month for 1 to 5 athletes, 39 USD for up to 100, tax basis not stated (source) | Yes (source) | Package pricing, free athletes |
| TrainHeroic | Web + mobile | Not found (where we looked) | Real-time chat (source) | From 9.99 USD/month for 1 athlete, by roster size, excl. US sales tax (source) | Yes (source) | Strength + endurance hybrid |
| TrueCoach | Web + mobile | Not found (where we looked) | Yes (source) | From 29.98 USD/month billed monthly for up to 5 clients, excl. taxes (source, terms) | Not found (where we looked) | Personal training businesses |
| Intervals.icu | Web | Not found (where we looked) | Group chat (source) | Free; Supporter 4 USD/month adds teams, as listed (source) | Not found (where we looked) | Data-driven self-coaching |
| Training Tilt | Web + mobile | Not found (where we looked) | Conversations and workout comments (source) | From 25 USD/month with 30 clients, excl. taxes (source, terms) | Own online store (source) | Business + coaching combined |
All prices in the table are what a coach pays, so every row is excl. taxes where the vendor states its tax basis. TrainingPeaks lists its prices with “additional taxes may apply”, TrainHeroic adds US sales tax where required, and the terms of TrueCoach and Training Tilt say their subscription fees exclude taxes. Final Surge and Intervals.icu do not say whether taxes are included, so we show their prices as listed and do not convert them. Because no vendor lists a price with VAT included, we convert nothing. For reference, TrainingPeaks, Final Surge, TrainHeroic and TrueCoach are based in the United States, Training Tilt is a New Zealand company (terms) and Intervals.icu is a UK company (Intervals.icu). Coachbox lists its prices in EUR excl. VAT. The currencies differ, so we do not convert between them, and because the tools bill different things (a coach fee plus Premium athletes, a package, a price per roster size, a plan with athletes included), we do not add them up into one total per roster. See Coachbox pricing.
How to Choose the Right Alternative
If you need testing integrated with coaching…
Go with Coachbox. This is the clearest path from TrainingPeaks if your main frustration is the gap between lactate testing and daily coaching. We did not find blood lactate test analysis in the documentation of the other tools on this list. In Coachbox, LT1 and LT2 come out of the test in under a minute and the zones go straight into the athlete’s future plan.
If you want better communication with athletes…
Most tools on this list have it. Final Surge (features), TrainHeroic (for coaches), TrueCoach (pricing), Intervals.icu (communicate), Training Tilt (Training Tilt) and Coachbox all offer messaging, while TrainingPeaks limits Messaging to Premium athletes (TrainingPeaks Messaging). Compared with TrueCoach, Coachbox adds endurance-specific features (zones, periodization, lactate testing), while TrueCoach adds an exercise video library and nutrition tracking (TrueCoach pricing). Choose based on whether your coaching is endurance-focused or more general.
If you want something cheaper or free…
Start with Intervals.icu or Final Surge. Intervals.icu’s core platform is free (Intervals.icu pricing). Final Surge charges coaches 19 USD per month for up to 5 athletes and gives athletes a free account (Final Surge pricing). You’ll miss some features, but the bill stays small.
If you coach both strength and endurance…
Consider TrainHeroic. In our view, its strength programming tools go deeper than any endurance-focused platform. Combine it with an endurance planning tool if needed, or consider Coachbox if your strength component is supplementary and endurance is the primary focus.
If you were on Today’s Plan…
Evaluate Coachbox and Final Surge. Coachbox offers analytics and multi-sport planning alongside integrated testing and communication. Final Surge offers planning for any sport with package pricing for coaches (Final Surge pricing).
If you want to manage your coaching business…
Look at Training Tilt. If a website, payments, an online store and your own brand matter as much as training delivery, Training Tilt puts them in one platform (Training Tilt pricing). Final Surge (Coaching Business), TrueCoach (pricing) and TrainingPeaks (TrainingPeaks Payments) also take client payments, so compare how each one fits the way you sell.
The Bigger Picture
In our view, TrainingPeaks earned its position through consistent execution and ecosystem building. For many coaches it remains the right choice, especially those who rely on marketplace revenue, work with athletes in federation programs, or have built their entire workflow around the TSS/CTL framework.
We see coaches increasingly expect testing, communication, and planning in one platform, and pricing that stays predictable as the roster grows. Coaches in Europe often want platforms that speak their athletes’ language and price in euros.
The best alternative for you depends on which TrainingPeaks limitation matters most to your practice. If it’s testing integration, we think that points to Coachbox. If it’s communication with every athlete, most tools here offer messaging without a Premium athlete tier. If it’s cost, Intervals.icu and Final Surge offer low-cost paths.
Choose the tool that matches your daily work, not the one with the biggest brand name.
