TL;DR: INSCYD is a metabolic profiling tool for coaches, sport scientists, labs, federations and teams (INSCYD FAQ). It models VO2max, VLamax, fuel utilization (fat and carbohydrate combustion) and more, giving you the “why” behind the numbers (INSCYD metrics). By its own description it is not a training platform where you build programs or communicate with athletes (INSCYD demo FAQ). Coachbox is a coaching platform with integrated lactate testing, for coaches who want to test, set zones and move straight on to training. Choose INSCYD if metabolic modeling is your core service, as it often is for exercise physiologists and elite performance teams. Choose Coachbox if you want testing connected to your daily coaching workflow in one platform.
Two Fundamentally Different Tools
This isn’t a comparison between similar products with slightly different features. INSCYD and Coachbox solve different problems.
INSCYD was founded by sport scientist Sebastian Weber. According to INSCYD, he developed the first test for glycolytic power (VLamax) in 2003 and his work helped World Tour cyclists win 9 world championship titles (INSCYD Coaching & Testing Camp). INSCYD builds a full metabolic profile from test data: aerobic capacity, glycolytic capacity, anaerobic threshold, energy cost of locomotion, fat versus carbohydrate contribution, lactate accumulation and recovery (INSCYD FAQ). The goal is to understand the physiology behind performance, not only to find a threshold number.
Coachbox was built for working coaches. It treats lactate testing as one part of a coaching platform that also covers training planning, athlete communication, calendars, analytics and annual periodization. The lactate module detects LT1 and LT2 automatically and calculates zones that feed straight into the rest of the platform.
The question isn’t which tool is better. The question is which problem you’re solving.
Feature Comparison
Metabolic Analysis
| Capability | Coachbox | INSCYD |
|---|---|---|
| Lactate threshold detection (LT1/LT2) | Automatic, under 60 seconds | LT1 and anaerobic threshold (MLSS) from the metabolic model, analyzed “within seconds” (lactate testing) |
| Threshold methods | Multiple LT determination methods | Model-derived thresholds |
| Spirometry | Coachbox lets you add spirometry data to a lactate test | Imports raw data from any metabolic cart or VO2 analyzer through Excel templates made for your device (INSCYD FAQ) |
| VLamax (glycolytic power) | Not available | Core metric |
| VO2max | Not available | Included |
| Fat/carb combustion rates | Not available | Fat and carbohydrate combustion |
| FatMax | Not available | Available as a base for zones (training zones) |
| Economy metrics | Not available | Included |
| Fatigue/recovery modeling | Not available | Included |
| Predictive modeling | Not available | Change a metric such as glycolytic or aerobic power and model the outcome (performance projection) |
| Zone calculation | Automatic, customizable | Zones built on the metric you choose, such as a percentage of VO2max or FatMax, and custom zones (training zones) |
Verdict: In our view, INSCYD goes far deeper on metabolism. If you need to understand why an athlete’s threshold sits where it does, or model how a change in VLamax or VO2max would shift performance, INSCYD is built for exactly that (performance projection). Both tools analyze a test quickly (lactate testing). Coachbox stays with what most coaches need from a lactate test: LT1, LT2 and zones, which then flow into the athlete’s training.
Coaching and Workflow
| Capability | Coachbox | INSCYD |
|---|---|---|
| Training planning | Full calendar and periodization | INSCYD states it doesn’t create training programs (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Athlete profiles | Complete with test history | Test history, performance development chart and comparison between athletes (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Zone management | Auto-updated from tests into the athlete profile and future workouts | Zones can be customized in the PDF report (automated reporting); sent automatically to AZUM through its API (AZUM integration) |
| Workout prescription | Integrated, zone-aware | Not part of INSCYD, by its own description (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
| Athlete communication | In-app messaging and comments on workouts | INSCYD says it is not the platform where a coach communicates to the athlete what to do (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
| Annual periodization | Built-in tools | Not found in their documentation (functions) |
| Analytics | PMC, load trends, progression | Performance tracking and comparison from tests, which can also be a training session or a race (training & race data); Load Analysis for teams (INSCYD for teams) |
| Health monitoring | HRV, sleep and resting heart rate from devices | Not found in their documentation (functions) |
| PDF reports | Branded, client-facing | Branded with your logo and address, with editable comments per figure (automated reporting) |
Verdict: This is where the products diverge most. Coachbox is a coaching platform. INSCYD is a testing and analysis tool, and it describes platforms such as TrainingPeaks as the place where you put the key sessions into a program and communicate with your athlete (TrainingPeaks vs INSCYD). So after an INSCYD analysis you use a separate platform for the day-to-day coaching. With Coachbox, the test results flow into the tools you coach with every day. Both products give you branded PDF reports.
Access and Onboarding
| Capability | Coachbox | INSCYD |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Web (all devices) | Web based, accessible from virtually anywhere (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Mobile access | Full functionality | Web app accessible from virtually anywhere (INSCYD FAQ); we did not find a separate mobile app in their documentation |
| Onboarding | Sign up yourself | Starter package with branded setup and 2 hours of 1:1 consultancy (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Certification | Not required | Optional certifications through the INSCYD College; we did not find a mandatory certification in their documentation (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Time to first test | Minutes | “Most coaches and labs are running their first INSCYD tests within first week of onboarding” (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
| Learning resources | Coachbox Academy | College courses, webinars, help center, email and chat support (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
| Public pricing | Yes | No, pricing is shown during the demo (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
Verdict: Both run in the browser on any device. The difference is the path to a first test. With Coachbox you sign up and run a test the same day. INSCYD starts with a demo and a guided onboarding, and most of its customers run a first test within the first week. In our view, reading a full metabolic profile well asks more physiology knowledge than reading LT1 and LT2, which is why INSCYD includes consultancy and courses.
Integrations
| Connection | Coachbox | INSCYD |
|---|---|---|
| TrainingPeaks | Not needed (planning built in) | We did not find a TrainingPeaks integration on INSCYD’s site; INSCYD presents the two as complementary tools (integrations, TrainingPeaks vs INSCYD) |
| AZUM | No direct integration | API connection: INSCYD metrics and training zones go straight into AZUM (AZUM integration) |
| Velocity | No direct integration | Video-guided tests in Velocity, data flows automatically to INSCYD (Velocity integration) |
| Stryd | Running power (e.g. Stryd) and power meter data come in with the workouts through the watch and platform sync, no separate connection needed | Upload a test file with Stryd running power for a metabolic profile (Stryd use case) |
| CARDIOWORLD | Not applicable | Partnership for Nova Lactate Plus meters and test strips, not a software integration (CARDIOWORLD partnership) |
| Hardware | Any lactate meter (manual entry) | Any equipment you have; INSCYD doesn’t sell hardware (lactate testing, INSCYD FAQ) |
Verdict: INSCYD connects to a few partner platforms (integrations), which makes sense for a tool that leaves training delivery to others. Coachbox has the coaching platform built in, so it needs fewer of these links. Neither product ties you to one brand of lactate meter (lactate testing).
The Workflow Difference
This is where the day-to-day reality of each tool becomes clear.
A Testing Session with INSCYD
- Run the test with the protocol that fits your equipment: lactate, VO2, power or field tests (lactate testing)
- Upload or enter the data in INSCYD
- Review the metabolic profile: VO2max, VLamax, thresholds, fuel utilization
- Interpret the results and set training zones on the metrics you choose
- Send the branded PDF report to the athlete (automated reporting)
- Carry the zones over to the platform where you plan training, which happens automatically if you use AZUM (AZUM integration)
- Update the training plan in that platform based on the new profile
A Testing Session with Coachbox
- Run your lactate step test (any protocol, any meter)
- Enter the lactate values in Coachbox, or photograph a paper protocol
- Coachbox detects LT1 and LT2 automatically
- Review the results and adjust if needed
- Zones update in the athlete’s profile
- Future workouts in the training plan use the new zones
- Share a branded PDF report with the athlete
The difference is not the analysis itself, both are fast (lactate testing). It is the steps after it: with INSCYD, the zones and plan changes happen in a second platform, unless that platform is AZUM (AZUM integration). With Coachbox, they happen in the same place you coach. How much time that saves depends on how often you test and which planning tool you use next to INSCYD.
Pricing Comparison
| Coachbox | INSCYD | |
|---|---|---|
| Published prices | Yes | No, pricing depends on testing volume, needs and business model, shown during the demo (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
| Model | Plan with athletes included: Base 19 EUR/month billed yearly or 25 EUR billed monthly (5 athletes, then 2.50 EUR per extra active athlete), Build 49 or 65 EUR (25 athletes, then 2 EUR), Peak 79 or 99 EUR (50 athletes, then 1.75 EUR), Prime 149 or 190 EUR (100 athletes, then 1.50 EUR), each first amount per month billed yearly and second billed monthly, all excl. VAT | Starter package with account setup, branding and 1:1 consultancy, then plans based on the number of tests or athletes, with no limit on coaches or athletes in the account (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Per-test cost for the coach | 3 to 6 EUR excl. VAT per test depending on the plan | Not published; plans scale with the number of tests or athletes (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Free tests | 5 to 20 free lactate tests at the start of your license, depending on the plan | One free test to try INSCYD yourself, a bonus for coaches who sign up for its email tips (INSCYD for coaches); we did not find free tests as part of a plan |
| What an athlete typically pays for a profile | Set by the coach | Usually 200 to 450 USD per profile, or 200 to 300 USD when bundled into a coaching subscription, set by the coach or lab (INSCYD FAQ) |
| Coaching platform | Included | Not part of INSCYD (INSCYD demo FAQ) |
Coachbox lists its prices without VAT. An active athlete is one with workouts planned in the future. INSCYD does not publish its own prices (INSCYD demo FAQ), so we can’t put the two subscriptions side by side, and we don’t add them up into one yearly total. The athlete price range is INSCYD’s description of what coaches and labs charge their clients, not an INSCYD fee; INSCYD doesn’t state whether it includes VAT (INSCYD FAQ).

What INSCYD Does Better
Where INSCYD is strong:
Metabolic depth. In our view, few tools come close to the metabolic model INSCYD builds. If you need to understand how VO2max and VLamax interact, model how a change in glycolytic power affects threshold, or plan fueling from fat and carbohydrate combustion, INSCYD is made for it (INSCYD metrics, performance projection).
A scientific foundation you can point to. INSCYD publishes its validation and verification approach and says its algorithms are backed by peer-reviewed research (validation & verification, INSCYD demo FAQ). For practitioners in academic or elite settings where the method has to be defensible, that carries weight.
Protocol flexibility. INSCYD works with lab tests, field tests and remote tests. With the Power Performance Decoder, cyclists test with a power meter and runners with a GPS watch, in the field and away from the coach (INSCYD PPD). That helps if your athletes are spread out geographically.
Elite users. INSCYD lists Movistar Team, Alpecin, CANYON//SRAM, the Belgian Cycling Federation and USA Triathlon among its users (INSCYD, customer stories). For coaches who aim to work at that level, knowing INSCYD is useful.
Modeling “what if”. You can change a metric, re-run the test and see the modeled outcome (performance projection). INSCYD itself notes it can’t predict the outcome of a specific training regime (INSCYD FAQ), but for long-term athlete development it gives you a clear target.
What Coachbox Does Better
And where Coachbox is strong:
Testing inside the coaching platform. In Coachbox, a lactate test isn’t a separate event that produces a report you then act on elsewhere. Zones update in the athlete’s profile, future workouts use them, and athletes see their results in the same app they open every day.
One platform for the practice. Training planning, athlete communication with comments on workouts, calendars, annual periodization, analytics, and HRV, sleep and resting heart rate from the athlete’s devices. All in one subscription, with no second planning tool next to it.
Published pricing. You see the price before you talk to anyone, and you can sign up and run a first test the same afternoon.
AI on your own data. Coachbox AI answers questions about an athlete, a workout or a season and can write changes into the athlete’s training plan. Coachbox also connects to ChatGPT and Claude over MCP.
Common ground, so you know it’s not a difference: both products work with the lactate meter you already own, and both produce branded PDF reports.
Who Should Choose INSCYD

Ideal Coachbox user: An endurance coach who runs regular lactate tests as part of their coaching and wants testing, training planning and athlete communication in one platform.
Can You Use Both?
Yes, and for some practitioners that is the best setup.
INSCYD for deep profiling, Coachbox for daily coaching. Run INSCYD metabolic profiles at key moments in the season for the big picture. Use Coachbox for regular lactate tests and all daily coaching. The INSCYD insights shape your training approach; Coachbox handles the execution.
This combination gives you:
- INSCYD’s metabolic depth at major assessment points
- Quick routine lactate tests in Coachbox, at 3 to 6 EUR excl. VAT per test
- One coaching platform for the daily workflow
The downside: two subscriptions, and carrying INSCYD’s zones into Coachbox by hand, since we don’t have a direct integration.
The Bottom Line
INSCYD and Coachbox are tools built for different jobs.
INSCYD is a metabolic analysis platform for understanding the science behind performance. It goes deep and has a scientific track record (validation & verification). It leaves training planning and athlete communication to another platform, by design (INSCYD demo FAQ).
Coachbox is a coaching platform with lactate testing built in, for turning test results into better training. It doesn’t attempt INSCYD’s metabolic depth, because it solves a different problem.
If your job is to understand metabolism, use INSCYD. If your job is to coach athletes day to day, use Coachbox. If your job involves both, consider using them together.
The best tool is the one that matches how you actually spend your working day.
