Coachbox vs WinLactat: Which Lactate Testing Tool Is Right for You?

Detailed comparison of Coachbox and WinLactat for lactate testing. Features, pricing, workflow, and who each is best for.

TL;DR: WinLactat is lactate diagnostics software for Windows PCs from mesics, which calls it “the world’s leading software for lactate analysis” (mesics software page). It serves clinics, rehab centers, sport scientists, trainers and performance diagnosticians (WinLactat brochure, German PDF), with configurable threshold models, spiroergometry import and training plans. Coachbox is a coaching platform for coaches, with lactate testing built in: calendar, annual plan, athlete communication and device sync in the same place as your test results. Choose WinLactat if you run a lab or clinic and want deep diagnostics on a Windows workstation. Choose Coachbox if you want test results flowing into training plans, athlete profiles and zone calculations as part of your daily coaching workflow, without a second system.

Two Different Philosophies

WinLactat and Coachbox both help you make sense of lactate test data, but they start from different places.

WinLactat comes from German sport science. mesics says it developed the software in collaboration with all Olympic Training Centers in Germany, as well as testing institutions and professional clubs, with universities and examination centers supporting its development since the mid-1990s (mesics software page). It’s a PC application built for thorough diagnostics: configurable threshold models, spiroergometry import, multiparameter diagnostics and links to patient management systems (mesics software page). It also covers training recommendations and training plans for your subjects (WinLactat brochure).

Coachbox comes from daily coaching. It treats lactate testing as one part of a coaching platform. The lactate module detects LT1 and LT2 automatically in under a minute, and the zones it calculates move straight into the athlete’s profile, workouts, annual plan and reports. It’s built for coaches who test, interpret and act in the same platform they coach from every day.

Neither approach is wrong. They’re built for different users with different priorities.

Feature Comparison

Lactate Analysis

Capability Coachbox WinLactat
LT1/LT2 detection Automatic, under 60 seconds, with drag and drop adjustment Customize every threshold individually per subject, with visual correction options (mesics software page)
Threshold models Multiple LT determination methods Configurable threshold models, including Mader, Dickhuth, Stegmann and LT1 (WinLactat brochure)
VLaMax Not available Included from the Professional plan (WinLactat brochure)
MaxLaSS Not available Included from the Professional plan (WinLactat brochure)
Comparing tests over time Test history per athlete, with dated zones Longitudinal and cross-sectional comparisons (mesics software page)
Zone calculation HR, power and speed zones, with a customizable zone model Training recommendations based on hybrid data sources (WinLactat brochure)

Verdict: WinLactat goes deeper on diagnostics. Beyond thresholds, its brochure lists analysis of recovery capacity, VO2max and energy expenditure, and VLaMax and MaxLaSS in the higher plans (WinLactat brochure). In our view, if you want to work with several threshold models on the same dataset, it’s made for that. Coachbox focuses on getting from a test to usable zones quickly, and on keeping a dated zone history: a workout is analyzed against the zones that applied on that day, so a new test changes future sessions without rewriting past ones.

Platform and Access

Capability Coachbox WinLactat
Where it runs Web, iOS and Android apps PC software for Windows (mesics FAQ, mesics software page); we did not find a macOS or browser version of WinLactat there
Mobile access Included in the Coachbox apps mesics offers a separate app, Lactate Express, for iPhone, iPad and Mac (Lactate Express page, App Store). The mesics FAQ says an Android version was expected in mid-April 2026; we did not find it on Google Play
Several users Unlimited coaches in every plan Multi-user capable, server capable, and portable on a USB stick; multi-workstation use is listed in the Clinical & Performance plan (WinLactat brochure)
Long-term compatibility Runs in the browser and the apps mesics promises a long compatibility span across new Windows versions (mesics software page)
Sync between devices One account on web and mobile Lactate Express syncs between iPhone, iPad and Mac (Lactate Express page)

Verdict: If you test at a Windows workstation in a lab, WinLactat fits that setup, and its server and USB options suit shared lab environments (WinLactat brochure). If you work on a Mac, a tablet or your phone, Coachbox runs there directly, while on the mesics side you’d pair WinLactat with the separate Lactate Express app (Lactate Express page).

Coaching Integration

Capability Coachbox WinLactat
Training plans Training calendar with workout builder Individual training plans in a few clicks (mesics software page); ready-made plans for marathon and running from the Professional plan (WinLactat brochure)
Groups Group messages for your team or athletes Performance groups built from your team’s individual tests (mesics software page)
Athlete communication Direct and group messages, feedback on workouts We did not find athlete messaging on the mesics software page or in the brochure
Annual planning Integrated annual plan with periodization We did not find an annual plan on the mesics software page or in the brochure. The older WinLactat 4.6 manual, German PDF, 2012 describes a training calendar per subject that you can print or export to Outlook, and the authorised retailer cardiozone mentions a training calendar in the mesics software
Device sync Garmin, Polar, Wahoo, Suunto, COROS, Fitbit, TomTom We did not find sports watch sync for WinLactat; the Lactate Express app imports Apple Health data (Lactate Express page)
Analytics Training load, PMC, power and pace Test-based analysis, including recovery capacity, VO2max and energy expenditure (WinLactat brochure)
AI Coachbox AI answers questions about your athletes and writes changes into the training plan; MCP connection to ChatGPT and Claude AI support listed in the Clinical & Performance plan (WinLactat brochure)

Verdict: Both products turn test results into training plans, so that’s common ground. The difference sits around it. WinLactat builds plans from diagnostics (mesics software page). Coachbox adds a daily coaching layer around the plan: an annual plan, workouts synced from your athletes’ devices and messages to talk about them. If you already coach from another platform, WinLactat works as your diagnostics tool next to it. If you want testing and coaching in one place, that’s what Coachbox is built for.

Hardware Compatibility

Capability Coachbox WinLactat
Getting lactate values in Type in the values, or photograph a paper protocol sheet and let Coachbox read it We did not find a list of supported meters on the mesics software page or in the brochure. The authorised retailer cardiozone lists a connection to the Lactate Express meter, and the older WinLactat 4.6 manual, German PDF, 2012 lists connections to Lactate Scout, Dr. Lange LP 20, Diaglobal Vario and EKF Biosen 5130
Meter connection in the mobile app No direct meter connection Lactate Express reads the Lactate Express and Metabol Pro meters over Bluetooth (Lactate Express page)
Own hardware Coachbox sells no meters mesics sells the Metabol Pro, which measures lactate, glucose, β-ketones, total cholesterol and uric acid (Metabol Pro)

Verdict: mesics offers its own meters and a direct link from meter to software, over Bluetooth in the Lactate Express app (Lactate Express page). Coachbox has no meter link: you enter the values yourself or let Coachbox read a photo of your paper protocol. The tradeoff is automatic transfer from a connected meter against a manual step in Coachbox.

Reporting

Capability Coachbox WinLactat
Report formats One-click PDF PDF and Word reports, with export to Word, PDF and Excel (WinLactat brochure)
Branding Lactate test PDF in your own brand; the app itself is not brandable Report designer with logo, colors and comments (WinLactat brochure)
Writing the report Automatic calculations in the report Integrated gapped-text editor with keywords (mesics software page)
Sharing Email to the athlete or client Chart export and PDF or Word files (WinLactat brochure)

Verdict: Both products produce branded reports, so this is common ground rather than a difference. WinLactat gives you more export formats (WinLactat brochure). Its text editor for detailed written findings suits clinical documentation (mesics software page). Coachbox generates the report in one click and sends it to the athlete from the same platform.

Advanced Features

Capability Coachbox WinLactat
Spiroergometry Add spirometry data to a lactate test Imports breath-by-breath and ventilatory threshold data (mesics software page) from devices such as Cortex and COSMED, with Wasserman 9-panel plots, from the Professional plan (WinLactat brochure)
HL7/GDT protocols Not available Supported, for integration with patient management systems (mesics software page)
API MCP connection for AI assistants API access in the Clinical & Performance plan (WinLactat brochure)
Multiparameter diagnostics Not available Multiparameter diagnostics in the software (mesics software page); the Metabol Pro meter measures five blood parameters (Metabol Pro)
Education Academy with courses Workshops in 2026 in Dagmersellen, Jülich and Lausanne (mesics software page)

Verdict: For clinical and institutional settings, WinLactat’s integrations matter. HL7 and GDT are the standard lab interfaces mesics names for connecting diagnostics to a patient management system. Both tools handle spirometry data, and WinLactat goes further with breath-by-breath import and ventilatory analysis. In our view, most independent coaches don’t need these clinical features, but if you do, WinLactat is built for them.

The Workflow Difference

Here’s how a test moves from data to training in each setup.

A Lactate Test with WinLactat

  1. Run the test and collect samples at each stage
  2. Enter or import the data into WinLactat on your Windows PC (mesics software page)
  3. Choose and configure your threshold models (WinLactat brochure)
  4. Review the curve and adjust thresholds if needed
  5. Create the report and, if you want, a training plan in WinLactat (mesics software page)
  6. If you coach from another platform, carry the zones over to it
  7. Send the report to the athlete

A Lactate Test with Coachbox

  1. Run the test and collect samples at each stage
  2. Type the values into Coachbox on any of its apps, or photograph your paper protocol
  3. Coachbox detects LT1 and LT2 automatically
  4. Review the results and adjust if needed
  5. The new zones go into the athlete’s profile, dated from the test
  6. Generate a branded PDF report and email it to the athlete
  7. Future workouts use the new zones

The difference is step 6 on the WinLactat side. If WinLactat is where you plan training, there’s nothing to carry over. If your coaching lives elsewhere, you move the zones by hand: we did not find a link to coaching platforms on the mesics software page. In Coachbox, testing and coaching share the same athlete profile.

Pricing Comparison

Coachbox WinLactat
Model Coaching plan per month with athletes included and a price per lactate test, or a standalone Lactate Module Plans per month by yearly testing volume: Basic up to 50 performance tests a year, Professional up to 100, Clinical & Performance unlimited (WinLactat brochure)
Listed price (coach or lab) Base 19 EUR/month billed yearly or 25 EUR billed monthly, Build 49 or 65 EUR, Peak 79 or 99 EUR, Prime 149 or 190 EUR, all excl. VAT. Standalone Lactate Module 49 EUR/month billed yearly, excl. VAT Basic from 55 EUR/month, Professional from 140 EUR/month, Clinical & Performance from 200 EUR/month, VAT basis and billing term not stated (WinLactat brochure)
Per test 3 to 6 EUR excl. VAT depending on the plan, with 5 to 20 free tests at the start of your license. Standalone bundles: 50 tests for 250 EUR, 100 for 400 EUR, 250 for 750 EUR, excl. VAT Tests within the plan’s yearly limit (WinLactat brochure)
Training plans Included Tailored training plans from Basic, ready-made plans from Professional (WinLactat brochure)
Mobile access Included in the Coachbox apps Separate Lactate Express app, free to download with monthly and yearly subscriptions in the app (App Store); the mesics FAQ says the app is free to use with both mesics meters
Meter Not sold by Coachbox Metabol Pro 599 EUR incl. VAT as listed, 503.36 EUR excl. VAT (Metabol Pro)
Lactate test strips Not sold by Coachbox 124.50 EUR incl. VAT per box of 50 as listed, 104.62 EUR excl. VAT (mesics shop)

Coachbox lists its prices without VAT. The mesics shop states that its prices include statutory VAT (mesics terms), so we converted the meter and strip prices with the German VAT rate of 19%. The WinLactat brochure doesn’t say whether its plan prices include VAT or how they’re billed, so we show them as listed and don’t convert them. The authorised retailer cardiozone lists the same plans plus 19% VAT and a provision fee (“Bereitstellung”) of 599 EUR; ask mesics which terms apply to you. The two products bill in different ways (Coachbox by athletes and tests, WinLactat by yearly testing volume), so we don’t add them up into one yearly total: what you pay depends on how many athletes you coach and how many tests you run.

Who Should Choose WinLactat

WinLactat is the better fit if you:

Ideal WinLactat user: A sport scientist, sports physician or lab-based practitioner at a university, training center, clinic or rehab practice who runs structured testing protocols on a Windows workstation.

Who Should Choose Coachbox

Coachbox is the right choice if you:

  • Coach athletes daily and want test results feeding directly into their calendar and annual plan
  • Work on macOS, tablets or phones as well as, or instead of, Windows
  • Want threshold detection in under a minute and zones that update the athlete’s profile
  • Want branded reports you send to the athlete from the same platform
  • Manage multiple athletes and want to cut the admin between a test and the next workout
  • Want one platform for testing, planning, communication, device sync and analytics
  • Prefer to start right away: sign up, start a free trial and enter your first test the same day

Ideal Coachbox user: An endurance coach who runs regular lactate tests as part of their coaching and wants those results connected to training planning, athlete communication and daily workflow.

Can You Use Both?

Yes. You can use WinLactat for deep analysis when you want to explore several threshold models, spiroergometry data or VLaMax (WinLactat brochure), and use Coachbox as your daily coaching platform where the practical zones live.

Coachbox works with manual data entry, so you can run your analysis in WinLactat and enter the resulting zones into Coachbox. We don’t have a direct integration, so this is a manual step, but it lets you combine WinLactat’s diagnostic depth with Coachbox’s coaching workflow.

In our view, this setup makes most sense when you run routine tests in Coachbox and keep WinLactat for cases that need the extra analysis.

The Bottom Line

Neither tool is strictly better. WinLactat and Coachbox are built for different people solving different problems.

If your work centers on the test itself, on methodological precision, clinical documentation and analytical depth, WinLactat is built for you. Universities and examination centers have supported its development since the mid-1990s, mesics develops it with all of Germany’s Olympic Training Centers, and it counts more than 5 million lactate tests run with it (mesics software page).

If your work centers on the coach and athlete, on turning test results into better training, clearer communication and a professional service, Coachbox is built for you. Testing sits inside the platform where you plan, communicate and follow up.

The best tool is the one that fits how you actually work.
